This is the Trust Signals section of the Complete Shopify Store Audit. It covers why faking trust backfires, the four types of reviews ranked by conversion impact, where to place UGC across the site, what doesn't work, and the niche-specific signals that actually address a customer's hesitation before they buy.

Trust Signals

Do not fake anything. Not reviews. Not scarcity. Not social proof numbers. Fake trust is worse than no trust.

Why it matters
Ninety percent of customers research your brand externally before they buy, Reddit, Google, TikTok. If they find one thing that contradicts what you're showing on your site, you've lost them permanently. A thousand fake reviews next to a Reddit thread full of complaints will convert worse than zero reviews with nothing negative out there.

The Only Signal That Consistently Moves the Needle

Video. Not influencer content. Customer content. Real people, real results, real language.

Four Types of Reviews, Ranked by Value

1
Video
Highest trust, highest conversion impact.
2
Image + text
Strong, especially with detailed written reviews.
3
Audio
Rarely seen. Worth testing, likely outperforms text alone.
4
Text only
Baseline, still worth having.

Where to Put Video Reviews

Make them conditional. A UGC element that appears everywhere unconditionally becomes noise. Triggered at the right moment, it converts.

What Doesn't Work

The generic trust icons, "Trusted by 10,000 customers," "Secure checkout," gold shield badges, rarely create measurable lift. They add visual clutter and signal that you're trying to manufacture credibility rather than demonstrate it.

Niche-Specific Trust Signals

CategoryTrust signals that actually work
SupplementsHSA/FSA eligibility, certifications, licenses, real doctor endorsements with credentials
FashionA sizing confidence widget showing what customers say about fit (runs small, true to size, runs large). Removes the single biggest hesitation in apparel.
High-ticket / MedicalFinancing options visible on the product page signal that the purchase is manageable

The Core Philosophy

The more you educate a customer about why a product is right for them, the use case, the benefit, what it feels like, what it does, the more they trust it. Education is trust. A well-placed UGC video of a real customer explaining why they love the product does more than any badge or icon ever will.

Less is more. A product page with two genuine video reviews outperforms one with twelve manufactured trust signals every time.

What good looks like
Real reviews, video first, image second, text supporting. UGC placed at the right moments across the site, not plastered everywhere. Niche-specific trust elements that address the actual hesitation your customer has. Nothing fake. Nothing generic.

Which of your leaks is actually costing the most?

A checklist shows you what to look for. It cannot tell you which leak is bleeding the most revenue on your store, or in what order to fix. The Store Autopsy ranks the 20 to 70 leaks actually costing you money, top 3 surfaced, delivered in about 2 weeks. $800, credited in full toward the fix. Proof, not opinions.
