Shopify's default sort is wrong. Four tiers, from a simple revenue fix to a full scoring formula with margin, sell-through, recency, and niche-specific layering.

This is the Collection Sort Order section of the Complete Shopify Store Audit. It covers four tiers of sorting logic, from switching Shopify's default to revenue, all the way to a full weighted scoring formula with niche-specific conditional layering.

Collection Sort Order

Shopify's default best-seller sort ranks by units sold, all time. That's the wrong metric. A $12 accessory that moved 400 units is not your best seller. Sort by revenue.

T1
Sort by Revenue
Change one thing: switch Shopify's best-seller sort from units sold to net revenue generated. This alone will immediately surface the products actually driving your business.
T2
Revenue + Time Decay
All-time revenue rewards old products that had a good run years ago. Add a rolling window, last 30, 60, or 90 days, and weight recency into the rank. High revenue, recent → top. High revenue, old → middle. Low revenue, old → bottom.
T3
Full Scoring Formula
Build a score for each product and sort by that score. Each variable is normalized to a 0–100 scale before weighting.
T4
Niche-Specific Layering
Layer conditional rules on top of the formula, seasonality, use-case boosts, occasion-based weighting. You're not replacing the formula. You're adding conditions that reflect what your specific customer is looking for right now.

The Scoring Formula (Tier 3)

Score = (Revenue × 0.40) + (Margin × 0.25) + (Sell-Through Rate × 0.20) + (Recency × 0.15)
VariableDefinitionWeight
RevenueNet revenue generated in the last 90 days40%
MarginProfit margin from Shopify's cost-per-item input25%
Sell-Through RateUnits sold ÷ units available × 10020%
RecencyNewer products get a boost; old slow-movers are penalized15%

These weights are a starting point, not a fixed rule. Adjust based on what your business actually needs to prioritize.

Niche-Specific Layering (Tier 4)

The formula applies to any store. What sits on top of it is specific to your customer. For fashion, add seasonality, certain products sell heavier in summer, others in winter. Layer that in as a conditional.

If season = summer → apply seasonal boost to summer items
If season = winter → apply seasonal boost to winter items

Every niche has its own version of this. The formula gives you the foundation. Knowing your customer tells you what to layer on.

What good looks like
A collection sorted by revenue, at minimum. Ideally by a weighted score that factors in margin, sell-through, and recency. Products that drive the most value sit at the top. Seasonal and niche-specific conditions are layered on for brands that need it.

Which of your leaks is actually costing the most?

A checklist shows you what to look for. It cannot tell you which leak is bleeding the most revenue on your store, or in what order to fix. The Store Autopsy ranks the 20 to 70 leaks actually costing you money, top 3 surfaced, delivered in about 2 weeks. $800, credited in full toward the fix. Proof, not opinions.
